<lj:music>Foo Fighters - The Pretender</lj:music>

I don't get to blog much anymore, but I think last night deserves to have one.

My childhood days were spent listening to the radio and pretending to be in a band. I remember daydreaming about what it would be like to play with my friends in front of a crowd and just letting the music consume me. I imagined that I would feel exhilarated, nervous, confident, self-conscious, and whatever pre-gig emotion you can think off.

Who would have thought I'd actually get to experience this?

Last night was a dream come true. Seeing my friends and family, knowing that they were there for us, hearing their cheers and feeling all their support was absolutely amazing. Nevermind the rain, nevermind the traffic, nevermind the panic, nevermind the worry that the bar would collapse with all the people in it, nevermind the two years we waited for this to happen. It was all worth it.

And it's all in this 7-track cd.

So to everyone who was at KAZE's "No Reason" EP launch last night, THANK YOU SO MUCH! This was a beginning and an end of sorts for the band, and I am so glad that you got to share this with us. Aylabyoo ol!

Oh, and to those who have pics and vids, pahingi! Wheee!

I think this is the first time I lost someone close to me that isn't family.

We were childhood friends. We played all sorts of games, went through most of the "phases" (bike phase, roller blades phase, Spice Girls phase, etc.), even joined the community youth organization together. Sure, there were times when we fought but all kids did that and we'd be back to hanging out with each other the next day or two.

I went off to UPLB, he went off to wherever to get a job and pursue a singing career (he was really very talented). But even when we grew older and led different lives, we'd still stop and chat whenever we passed by each other on the street as if the years we hadn't seen each other didn't happen. It's like we were kids again (except the games and phases were out, and alcohol came into the picture. LOL).

I found out about his sickness just last month, when his mother came by to borrow my nebulizer. She told me his health was deteriorating and that he was skinny as hell. That caught me completely by surprise; I had seen him walking on the street on my way home a couple of months back and he looked okay to me. A couple of weeks ago, I found out he was rushed to PGH.

And then last night, my mom told me he was dead. He was only 24.

I'm used to seeing him walking around the village, hearing him videoke his heart out, hanging out with him and a couple of neighbors every December 31 and waiting for the first sunrise of the New Year (a tradition we started a couple of years ago). Though we haven't talked much lately, I know things won't be the same from now on.

Last night, I got to see neighbors I haven't seen in years at his wake. We exchanged stories and relived our experiences and escapades with him - the old BYO days (with the bote-dyaryo drives, garage sales, and all that jazz), Tai Chi with Guru Dada, songwriting at my house, making a mess of "More Than Words" during one village Christmas party all those years ago (this was something I had forgotten, but it all came back thanks to RV, hahaha), drinking at Chemi's house and witnessing Laiza get her ass kicked by the alcohol, watching a Cherry Pie Picache movie at ATC, and the list goes on. I only wish we all met again under different circumstances.

Tomorrow will be a bittersweet New Year's Eve spent with old friends and tradition (in his memory). Rest in peace, Benj. I know you're in a better place. We will miss you.

Pictures were snagged from RV.

RV, Benj, Miw, Tippi

Clockwise, starting from the upper left: RV, Tippi, K, Macy, Miwa, and
Benj, during one of our yearly traditions.

That's Benj pulling me out of RV's mouth.

I never planned on going to Pangasinan; it was just a place we happened to pass by on our way to Ilocos. But a couple of text messages exchanged with my sister and a week later, I found myself waiting with Miwa, Bri and 11 strangers for the van that would take us to Bolinao, Pangasinan for an overnight stay at Solomon's Paradise (aka SP) and a guided tour of Bolinao's beaches, caves, and uh, beaches.

And did I mention beaches and caves?

DAY 1

We left Makati a little after 2am last Saturday and arrived at the resort (owned by Brett and Rosie Solomon) around 9am. Before I continue, I'd like to put names on the different groups of people we went with so you and I won't get too confused.

a.) "Spice Girls" - 5 female officemates (I think)
b.) "The Couple" - the name speaks for itself, yes?
c.) "Desperate Housewives" or DH - they're not necessarily housewives and I don't think they're in any way desperate. They're just a group of four friends on a trip. DH was just the first 4-female group that came to mind.

Anyway, our tour guide (Jonathan) let us settle down in our cottage-like rooms (we got room #2, between the Spice Girls and The Couple). Miw, Bri and I tossed our bags on the bed and went straight to ordering breakfast and taking pictures.

Ah yes, such wonderful priorities.

After breakfast and a quick change of clothes, Kuya Jov (the driver) took us to our first stop - the Enchanted Cave (or is it? Dun dun duuuuuuun). I have not entered a cave since that field trip to Biak Na Bato way back in highschool (or was that elementary?). No, that Bantay Abot Cave in Ilocos is not a cave but a hole on the side of mountain. No caverns, no bats poo, nothing. So I don't consider it a cave. I didn't even hear an echo.

But I digress. Inside the cave was a pool of the clearest water I've ever seen where the tourists are welcome to swim in. Most of us (Miwa, Bri, The Couple, and 3/5 of the Spice Girls) couldn't resist the water. The Desperate Housewives weren't feeling it and went back to the surface after taking a couple of pictures. I stayed behind and watched people float, paddle, take pictures, pretend as mermaids, and scream bloody murder when they hurt their foot on the rocks. Oh, and of course I took pictures. They suck, though. I'm new to cave photography.

Next stop was Bolinao Falls 1 (yes, there's more than one). The ride to the waterfall was a tad bit uncomfortable with a damp younger sister sitting beside me. Anyway, it was when we got there that I realized that going to see a waterfall meant going down (and then up) a lot of steps. Lots of steps + partially healed ankle = ARAY. I had to take extra precaution to avoid any accidents. The waterfall was pretty but the water wasn't too enticing so all we did was take pictures. The Spice Girls wanted to swim some more, so they suggested that we go hunt for the 2nd waterfall. Jonathan had no idea where it was, so we had to use the services of a young boy a Spice Girl picked up nearby.

That didn't come out quite right but I think you get my drift.

We finally found the 2nd waterfall, and then my slipper broke. Shet. I had no choice but to stay behind and talk with Kuya Jov, who is actually very insightful and opinionated in a good way. He also fixed my slipper but it was too late to go after the others by then (which, according to Miwa, was a good thing - she thinks I won't be able to climb the steep terrain because of my slipper, ankle, and lack of trekking skills). After the others had had enough of the water (DH finally gave in and got themselves wet), we were all ready to go back because we forgot to have lunch, and that was when Kuya Jov saw a flat tire. Shet #2. To cut the long story short, he changed the tire, drove to the town proper to drop off the others who wanted to buy dinner and have it cooked back at the resort, fixed the flat tire at a nearby vulcanizing shop, then went back to SP to watch the sunset.

DAY 2

I woke up to the sound of soft music (Low, Bartender, Disturbia, etc) coming from The Couple's room. It was supposed to be a free day, meaning we could do whatever we want (that includes sleeping in) but we decided to go see the lighthouse and go to the beach since we weren't able to visit the day before.

Sadly, the lighthouse was closed so we took pictures of the exterior and the perimeter instead. I don't think it was a waste of time; lighthouses all look the same anyway. And I don't think I could climb all those stairs to the top. Next was the Patar White Beach. The Spice Girls couldn't resist the water again and ran to meet the crashing waves, while the rest of us took pictures, walked along the shore, took more pictures, "climbed over the fence" to a resort, took more pictures, were chased away by the resort security guard and took more pictures. At around 12 noon, we decided to go back to SP and have lunch before going home to Manila.

I'm going to make this short since I'm running out of words. We passed by Alaminos for some boneless bangus and banana-q, I kept shifting in my seat to get the blood flowing back in my legs, feet and buttocks, had dinner in Tarlac, watched Wanted on Bri's PSP (I couldn't hear anything because we didn't have enough earphones but I still understood a bit of what was going on), got to Makati around 10pm, arrived home at 11.

And that, my friends, was my trip to Bolinao.

BAD LUCK

A week before the trip, I twisted my ankle and I had to walk in crutches.

Somewhere during the trip, I broke my glasses.

I kept hitting my shoulder on that aircon whatever extension inside the van.

My slipper broke just as we were about to go to the 2nd waterfall.

The van had a flat tire because of the terrain. Lots and lots of sharp rocks.

I accidentally spilled Pepsi on Miwa and Bri (it was actually Miwa's fault, she told me there was a spider right behind me).

The DSLR started acting up, that's why we don't have any digital pictures of the lighthouse and the beach.

Miwa's Adventure. It's her story to tell.

We almost ran out of gas in Tarlac, and Jonathan's credit card wasn't working.

Saya, diba?

SOLOMON'S PARADISE

Fantastic view. Accomodating hosts. Clean bathrooms and showers. Great food. Affordable prices. Nice and simple rooms. Comfortable beds. Roof deck. Very few insects. In other words, I love the place.

FOOD

Boneless bangus. Grilled liempo. Grilled chicken. A huge, 3-foot fish that only costs Php450. Hotdogs. More liempo. Piattos. Oishi. Banana-q. Hamburger with the thinnest burger patty in the world. More hotdogs. Twister fries.

Yep, no time to do some major pigging out but we're pretty content with what we ate. Masarap eh.

I guess that's it. I'd love to go back without the bad luck. LOL.

    <lj:music>John Mayer - Free Falling</lj:music>

What do you know, it's finals week.

I never thought I'd actually enjoy teaching. Is this my calling? I'm not really sure. But I can honestly say right now that I love what I'm doing, despite the headaches, issues, disappointments, and stress.

A lot can happen in four months - exams, projects, exhibits, a field trip and a pageant. The way I see things have changed considerably now that I'm on the other side of the fence. I had to exercise restraint and discipline to keep that line between a student and a teacher. People whom I thought would cause me problems turned out to be well-behaved (with the usual bouts of laziness but that is to be expected), and those whom I thought would be reliable turned out to be, uh, different. So different that they forced me to raise my standards and become stricter.

I also found out who my real friends are. How cool is that?

My colleagues are crazy, not to mention they all love food. I fell right into place...eventually. LOL. It took me some time because most of them used to be my instructors, and now one of them is my boss (hello, fresh grad here. I was still in "student-mode" when I started teaching). Sure, the mentor-mentee vibe is still there, but now I get to see a whole different side of her and the faculty that I never would have seen as a student.

I don't know how long I'll stay. Then again, as long as I'm enjoying, I shouldn't be thinking about it, right?

So yeah. See you next semester.

I just spent the last two hours battling against worms and malware. I managed to get rid of the malware, the worm is still there, and my external hard drive (Kangkong) had gone haywire.

Half of my raw photos' folders have been rendered unreadable. It includes the pageant photoshoot, the pre-pageant night, the EK trip and Top Junk anniversary, the Media Arts exhibit, and many more.

A lot of other folders became useless, but at least I have copies of those in my internal hard drive (which was miraculously spared from...whatever it was that happened to Kangkong).

But you know what almost made me lose it? My thesis video. It's paking gone.

It's ironic that I was planning to make backups of everything tomorrow, even before my Kangkong decided to make my life a lot harder.

I'm going to ATC tomorrow to have it checked. <lj:music>Manic Street Preachers - Your Love Is Not Enough</lj:music>

Three Sundays ago, I almost got run over by a yellow Pajero on our way home from church. It was raining hard and my parents and I were on our way to the car. I was busy avoiding puddles and I looked up just in time to see a car headed straight towards me and it wasn't slowing down. If my father hadn't yanked me to the side, I'd probably have a couple of broken bones by now.

Foolishly foolish fool of a driver who foolishly drives near the sidewalk and doesn't look at where he's driving.

***

Mangaholix held a seminar last week about drawing and coloring. Nakaka-inspire. It's been a while since I drew me some anime-style characters. So yeah, I'm thinking of going back to drawing stuff like that.

***

Last Tuesday, I went to Dasmariñas, Cavite for a Comprehensive Growth Series (CGS) with the guidance counsellor and ten MassCom and Media Arts students. It was actually a last minute thing (the real facilitator was sick and I was called to be the replacement), but it was fun. And the food was great. Yum yum.

***

Last Friday was the first time I attended a College Cup opening. It was...okay.

***

The band played for a benefit gig for Tara. FYI, Tara is Saffron Speedway's guitarist, and she was shot in the head during a violent holdup incident in Cainta. She's in a coma right now, and we're hoping she wakes up soon.

It's just like what Marge (of Free Beer) said: "It's amazing how people, strangers and friends alike, can gather and show their support when something like this happens to someone." Okay, so maybe that's not what she said exactly but you get the drift, right?

Thanks to Che and FAME for the invite!

***

Had a sWiimming party with friends last Saturday. Some went swimming, others played Wii. Lecheng boxing yan, sakit ng katawan ko.

***

I saw a lunar eclipse last Saturday, on our way home from Katipunan. I wouldn't have noticed it if Chevy didn't point it out. Alavet alavet alavet!

Uh, yun lang. Bow.

I should really be catching up on some shut eye right now but I wanna Bubblegang.

I was just going through my old Multiply posts and I saw my last "conyo-tations" compilation. LOL Parang gusto ko tuloy ulit mangolekta.

Two Pinoy guys are singing along to Avril Lavigne's "Girlfriend" on TV right now in Bubblegang's IyoTube segment. What the hell. Hmmm, a pair of boys making complete fools of themselves, lipsynching to a pop song while someone in the background is busy doing something else? Veeeeeery original. <lj:music>Vanessa Carlton - White Houses</lj:music>

This is my fourth week. I think I'm starting to get the hang of it.

So what's been happening lately?

• We managed to get a regular gig down at the Freedom Bar in Anonas, QC with Top Junk (Tuesday's band). Yes, I know it's far but hey, it's all for the music right?

• "First blaaaaad!" Yey!

• The band met last Friday at Big Apple BF for dinner and a meeting. With Faye's impending departure (work demands her to go to New York for a couple of months), we have to finish whatever we need to do for the EP before she leaves, lest the launch be delayed. Again.

• Speaking of departures, my older sister will also be flying to San Fransisco for work on July 10. She'll be staying there for a couple of weeks. I'm still thinking of what I should ask her to buy for me.

• My parents have finally finished setting up the koi pond. Filters, water lilies, rocks, etc. The kois are happy. The constant sound of running water is somehow soothing and makes it very difficult to get up in the morning. I tried to show my cat the pond and the fish yesterday and the furball almost shredded my shirt trying to get away. She thinks I'm taking her there for a bath.

• I've been reading this online comic book called Looking For Group. It has all sorts of allusions in it, from World of Warcraft to Lord of the Rings to Star Wars to Big (that Tom Hanks movie). And I heart Richard. For Pony!

That's it. Band practice later, gig tomorrow. Woosh. I'm off to school.

It's funny how Sam can just open her eyes and Doi and I would fuss over her and completely ignore her mother. LOL.

And the little girl smiled at me. Homaygad. I love her.

Waah! Cute cute!

===

My bandmates and I are going straight to that RockEd event in QC after practice. I was having second thoughts because I would love to catch up on my sleep, but I thought it could be the last time I'll be able to watch a complete Mozzie before their bassist leaves for the States. Ang dami talagang umaalis. =(

I should go back to working on my syllabus.

From Mindoro, With Love (And A Full Stomach)

This is a late post.

===
Sunday, June 01, 2008, 10:16pm
Roxas, Oriental Mindoro

I had my reservations about going to the Gabutero reunion in Mindoro because of several reasons but I'm glad I decided to go. It feels so liberating to not actually care about *toot* and *bleep* and do something that I want to do without feeling guilty. I haven't been here for 7 effing years. I would've regretted it more if I gave in to my so-called responsibilities and stayed in Manila.

It's also nice to take a break from my usual routine (aka wake up, eat, internet, eat, internet, exercise, internet, eat, internet, sleep). I've been unceremoniously woken up at ridiculous hours in the morning (with a body clock like mine, 7am is already ridiculous) to eat breakfast, take a bath, then go to the house my dad grew up in, or the house my parents are going to stay in when they retire, or the beach. There's always something to do here, and we had to do it early. It's kind of a shock to my system. Looking at the bright side, at least it's fixing my body clock.

We visited my grandfather's grave yesterday. Tearjerking moment. I hate watching people cry.

And then we went back to Daddy's childhood home and sang videoke loud and weird enough to wake up the dead to whack us at the back of our heads.

This is what I love about these people. There's never a time when you can't hear people laughing because they're always joking or teasing each other (my grandmother has a lot of embarrassing ammunition on her kids), it's crazy. Goodluck nalang if they decide to put you in the hotseat.

It's now a little past 10pm. We (my uncles, aunts, cousins, parents, and grandmother) just finished looking at old pictures of our family reunions. Gahd, I looked like a gazelle. Yes, I was thin once. You have no idea how many times I heard the words "payat" and "noon" in the span of 20 minutes. Anyway, most of my family have retired to our rooms (we're staying at my uncle's house which can house the entire Gabutero clan). My sister and I stayed behind; I'm writing this down, while she's lounging at one of the chairs and texting (uuuuy, textmate).

We're going back to Manila tomorrow morning and back to the usual routines, to the trainings, recordings, chores and work. Gah. At least I have the Ilocos trip to look forward to next weekend. This time, it's my mother's side that's holding a semi-reunion, plus it's my maternal grandmother's sister's first year death anniversary. All of my bandmates are coming with us and I'm stoked. It's my last hurrah before I leave the bum life.

Before I forget, Happy birthday, Ate Jo! Nagparty kami kanina, too bad you're in Singapore. We spent about 100k. Thanks for picking up the tab! =P

    <lj:music>Sheena Easton - Telephone</lj:music>

Two nights ago, I had a dream about people dying. Some of them were my friends, some were acquaintances, some were fictional characters from TV. The eerie thing about it was that all 9 of them were murdered and I either saw it happen or found their bodies.

9 people. Anuba. I have never seen that much death in one dream.

I don't remember everything, but I remember seeing one being knifed to death inside the MRT/LRT. I can still picture the look of horror in her eyes as one of her attackers covered her mouth while the other started stabbing. Her companion got away from them and wandered into a deserted alley where a group of guys...basta yon. Thinking about what happened to those two is really disturbing.

Another one was found dead on the roof (how he got there, I have no idea) with his head bashed in. I had gone into his room earlier and saw the bed all bloody, and that's how we knew. My friends and I went looking for him and when we got to the roof, voila. Cadaver.

Another one was found buried in the yard. I was walking my dog (something I don't do in real life) when he went ballistic and ran to a neighbor's house. At first I thought it was his hormones going haywire because of the neighbor's dog (which was also male), but when I ran over to him...charan! Cadaver.

I also had a couple of close calls. I almost fell down a manhole trying to save myself from being run over by a car.

Funny how I dreamt about these things after marathon-ing American Idol 7.

I checked the internet for dream interpretations. Most of them say death could be linked to a change in my relationships with these people, or concern for their well-being, or my personal limitations. Or maybe I'm an up and coming psycho, I dunno. Whatever it means, I don't ever want to dream of carnage like that. Ever. O_o

    <lj:music>Carly Smithson - Come Together</lj:music>

American Idol Season 7 finale stuff. If you haven't seen it and you don't want to be spoiled, your eyes better not go beyond the period.

Carly Smithson (why does she have to be so darn gorgeous?) and Michael Johns' performance rocked and had more chemistry than that of the two Davids. Then again, I can't quite imagine Archie putting his hand on Cook's chest...

Anyway.

Syesha Mercado and Seal looked kinda awkward together.

Jason Castro sang all by himself, which is a good thing since I don't know if he'd have chemistry with anybody.

Archie and OneRepublic singing "Apologize" was okay, maybe because I like the song.

The girls + Donna Summer = wow.

The boys + Bryan Adams (I never realized how old he was until I saw him) = also wow. Take away Adams, only Michael Johns and the two Davids were wow. Jason totally killed the "rock factor" in Summer Of '69 (it's pretty obvious how much I dislike him).

Ryan Seacrest attempting to breakdance - "A" for the effort. Stick to the hosting.

Guru Pitka and his "Mariska Hargitay" greeting - Bwahahahaha! Puwede!

David Cook and ZZ Top - I loved the guitars (it looks like David has a new one) and the mic stand. I'm not familiar with ZZ Top songs though.

Brooke White and Graham Nash - surprisingly good. Although there was part in the song where they had to sing differenct lyrics at the same time, and Brooke looked like she was about to go to war and staring intently at the audience. Maybe she was looking at the prompter so she won't mess up her lyrics.

Reynaldo Lapuz complete with the USC Marching Band - two words. Excrutiating pain.

Gladys Knight and "The Pips" (aka Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downy Jr.) - pretty cool. RDJ looked cute dancing and singing, hehe. It looks like last year's Celine Dion/Elvis Presley duet set some kind of finale trend. Are they going to do something like this again next year? I'm thinking Michael Jackson and Miley Cyrus (though I don't think she's his type).

Carrie Underwood was amazing. Shet. *bows in reverent worship*

George Michael's song was so depressing. Shet. I know a couple of people who _might_ just off themselves if they watched it.

And the winner is...David Cook. Now excuse me while I go stalk Carly.

Still, I'm not getting any younger and I feel like I've missed out on a lot of things. I was recently at a party, and as I watched my companions talk about photography, recording, travelling and whatnot, I realized there's so much out there to see.
